TRANSPORT
Bicycle - The traditional form of transportation around Cambridge. Bikes can be rented from a number of establishments: www.thebikeman.co.uk, www.stationcycles.co.uk
Bus - To reach local villages, bus might be your best bet: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/bus_timetables
Train - For longer journeys you might want to go by train: www.nationalrail.co.uk
Car rental - Cambridge was not built for cars and we would not recommend renting a car, but if you do want to, we have had good experiences with: www.valueautorentals.co.uk
ENTERTAINMENT
EATING OUT
Pubs can be good venues for lunch or dinner. For a definitive guide to Cambridge pubs (of which there are around 120) visit www.cambridge-pubs.co.uk.
A few recommendations would be: The Eagle, The Anchor, The Maypole, The Flying Pig, The Free Press and The Fort St George.
Alcohol in the UK:
The drinking age in the UK is 18. If you are 16 or 17 you may enter some establishments, but not drink alcohol. If you are under 16, you may only enter a drinking establishment with an adult. The best course of action, if you are underage but wish to have lunch in a pub for example, is to ask the manager whether you are permitted to buy food and soft drinks at the establishment. Some pubs allow this. There are also some no-alcohol nights organised for underage students at clubs. Note that Reach Cambridge will repatriate any student under 18 caught drinking alcohol on one of its programmes.
Restaurants are plentiful in Cambridge, a good directory can be found here: www.visitcambridge.org/visitors/eatinganddrinking.php. Otherwise, some recommendations are: Browns for traditional English food, The Bun Shop for Tapas, The Venue and Loch Fyne Restaurant for fish, Chez Gerrard for French, Don Pasquale for Italian and Midsummer House for the best dining in Cambridge.
